Orthokeratology – night contact lenses

Correct your vision while you sleep and see brilliantly during the day!

Do you want to see clearly without glasses and contact lenses, but are afraid or unable to undergo laser vision correction? Choose night contact lenses or corneal refractive therapy!
Orthokeratology, or the so-called night contact lens use, is a special type of vision correction that, without surgical intervention, frees you from the use of glasses and contact lenses during the day.

Functionally, laser vision correction and night contact lenses work similarly – the shape of the cornea is changed, which makes it possible to see clearly without glasses and contact lenses. In laser vision correction, the shape of the cornea is surgically changed – one operation is enough to forget about glasses and contact lenses altogether. In contrast, in orthokeratology, a special pair of night contact lenses is inserted into the eyes every evening before going to bed, with which it is safe to sleep at night, and the contact lenses must be removed in the morning. Special contact lenses change the shape of the cornea at night and do not require glasses or contact lenses during the day. The effect is temporary, so night contact lenses must be worn every night before bed to maintain sharp vision throughout the day.

Night contact lenses are a great alternative for those who, for various reasons, cannot or do not want to undergo laser vision correction. The method is becoming increasingly popular among children and adolescents, where night contact lenses are used to limit the progression of myopia, which is associated with children’s rapid growth and many changes in the body.

  • Correct your vision while you sleep!
  • Wear lenses at night, but see clearly during the day!
  • Special pair of contact lenses for a year
  • No surgical intervention
  • No age limit
  • Can limit the progression of myopia
  • Especially recommended for children and adolescents
  • Corrects myopia up to -4D (-6D) and astigmatism -1D (-1.75D)

Night contact lenses

Night contact lenses are special contact lenses that are made of a special material with extremely high oxygen permeability, so they are safe to sleep with at night. Unlike daytime contact lenses, which must be changed regularly, even one pair of night contact lenses per year is sufficient, unless any indicators change significantly during the year.

Night contact lenses are worn while sleeping and the lenses are almost motionless during the night, so the compatibility of the contact lenses with the eye is very important. Each person is selected for their own special pair of contact lenses, taking into account both the size of the eye and the refractive error that needs to be corrected.

Thanks to the special design of contact lenses and the pressure of the eyelids, during the night, while a person sleeps for 6-8 hours, the tears under the lens act on the upper layer of the cornea (epithelium) and change its shape – creating a specially suitable depression in the cornea. In the first few days, the effect may persist in the first half of the day and visual acuity may deteriorate in the evening, but after a few days, with constant use of the lenses, sharp vision will remain throughout the day.

Frequently asked questions

Simply put - a specially selected contact lens changes the shape of the cornea of the eye while you sleep, so that additional vision correction products are not required during the day. The effect is reversible! If you stop wearing contact lenses, your vision will return to the level it was before starting orthokeratology.

Yes, you can have laser vision correction surgery after using night contact lenses. It should be noted that a special preoperative examination must be performed before the operation to determine suitability for the operation. In order for the data obtained during this examination to be correct, the eyes must be removed from night contact lenses for 30 days before the operation, so that the cornea regains its natural shape.

Lenses are available with strengths up to -6.00D and astigmatism correction up to -1.75D, but the best results are up to -4.00D and astigmatism up to -1.00D. In the interval from -4.00 to -6.00, the eye parameters must be carefully evaluated to understand whether the lenses will be suitable.

There is no minimum age limit, but parents must seriously evaluate the child's sense of responsibility and his ability to talk about his feelings. Parents can help with inserting/removing and caring for the lenses, but the child should be able to tell them for themselves, for example, if they feel uncomfortable or uncomfortable with the lenses.

There is no guarantee that the progression will be stopped, but in scientific studies, orthokeratology shows the best results in slowing and stopping the progression of myopia. The results depend on the degree of myopia and the patient's age, as well as the rate of progression so far.

This time period is individual for each patient, but the optimal time period for vision stabilization is 7-14 nights after starting the method. The sharp vision of the first day will remain in the first half of the day and will worsen in the evening. During this transition period, patients can wait or wear their old glasses or soft contact lenses (if they are trained to do so). When wearing lenses constantly, vision will remain sharp throughout the day.

The lenses should be worn every night to ensure myopia control. If a night is missed, the next day's acuity will be worse. It is important to wear the lenses regularly, especially in the initial period, so that the compatibility of the parameters with the eye can be assessed.

No contact lenses should be worn for a week before the first examination. When coming for check-ups, it is advisable to follow your normal daily routine and not avoid activities. It is advisable to sleep with your lenses on for at least 6-8 hours before the check-up visit and to wear them regularly, without missing a single time for a week.

Since contact lenses are worn at night, the lens is almost motionless, so the compatibility of the eye with the contact lens must be regularly assessed, and in children, eye parameters can still change, especially during adolescence.

The lenses are made of a special material with a particularly high oxygen permeability, which allows you to sleep with the lenses. The lenses are specially selected individually for each eye. If the care regimen, expiration date and regular check-ups are followed, then contact lenses do not harm your eyes!
