Phototherapy for Dry Eye Syndrome

A modern choice with long-term benefits

Lumenis M22 is a medical laser device used in the treatment of several dermatological pathologies. One of the methods used in the treatment of the device is IPL (intense pulsed light) in the facial area of patients with dry eye syndrome. IPL is a therapeutic method used in the treatment of dry eye syndrome in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction (MDD).

The therapy is based on the application of intense light with a certain wavelength (spectrum) of light to the skin, which results in a photothermal effect in the eyelids and periocular area, promoting the liquefaction of the meibomian gland contents, improving the quality of the natural tear lipid layer, and reducing the symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

In patients suffering from chronic eyelid inflammation or blepharitis caused by demodicosis (Demodex spp. or eyelash mite), the IPL treatment method promotes necrosis of Demodex eyelash mites, as a result of which it has a therapeutic effect in the treatment of blepharitis and is able to improve the secretion of natural tear lipids.

  • tearing of the eyes in the wind
  • itching in the eye area
  • dryness in the eyes
  • periodic eye redness
  • frequent formation of styes

The goal of IPL therapy is to reduce the intensity of complaints associated with dry eye syndrome and improve the homeostasis of the tear film.

Procedure

1. Before the procedure, the treatment method used for you will be precisely determined, according to your skin type and the type of dry eye syndrome.

2. The procedure takes place without anesthesia (analgesia).

3. During the procedure, you will be lying down on the procedure bed. Eye shields will be placed on your eyelids to protect you from the unwanted side effects of the intense light. N.B.! It is important that you keep your eyes closed during the procedure, as instructed by your doctor!

4. An inert gel will be applied to your face, which is necessary to ensure adequate contact with the laser device, as well as for better transfer (cooling) of excess heat.

5. When the irradiation of the facial skin begins, the doctor will warn you about it. During the irradiation, you may experience mild discomfort. N.B.! If the discomfort is excessive, you must report it to the doctor during the procedure!

6. After the irradiation, the doctor will perform an eyelid massage with soft instruments – the purpose of which is to express the contents of the meibomian glands.

7. To obtain the maximum effect of IPL in reducing the symptoms of dry eye syndrome, it is recommended to repeat the IPL procedure – four to six times with an interval of three to six weeks between each treatment session.
